Gaiam Inc. has tapped ALC of New York LLC to manage the rental of three related customer lists. The cataloger previously managed its files in house, but only for list exchanges. Gaiam targets socially conscious consumers who are interested in physically and spiritually healthy living. Its product line includes items related to fitness, yoga and natural lifestyles. Gaiam's lists, each naming those who made purchases in the last 24 months, are Harmony, with 92,000 names; Living Arts, with 83,000; and Inner Balance, with 12,000. About 75% of the customers listed are women, generally 45 to 54 years old, with annual household incomes ranging between $50,000 and $75,000. The average unit of sale runs $85 to $100. The sole source for the file is direct mail.

Advanstar Healthcare Files
Advanstar Communications has consolidated management of more than a dozen healthcare industry lists under one roof at MeritDirect. This action follows Advanstar's purchase of healthcare, dental and veterinary publications, plus a trade show, from Thomson Publishing last fall. In March, Advanstar moved four files to MeritDirect: Dental Lab Products, Dental Products Report, Dental Practice Report and Drug Topics. Trader Publishing Co. is starting the Customer Value Bag insert program. Sellers of used cars and trucks receive a bag full of auto-related product samples when they visit an Auto Trader dealer. Once there, they pay to have their vehicles photographed and listed in one of the 650 local editions of Auto Trader magazine. Men comprise 63% of this audience. A projected 1.6 million bags are expected to be distributed each year. Inserts, samples or catalogs can be collated inside a 6-inch by 9-inch envelope or dropped inside the bag. There is no maximum weight limit, but pieces will be priced by weight. Up to 12 inserts will be distributed per bag.
