Direct Tv Programming
House Passes TV Bill - direct broadcast satellite television programming - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that would allow satellite television firms like Hughes Electronics Corp.'s DirecTV to offer local TV programming to customers.
Firms like El Segundo-based Hughes have lobbied almost three years for permission to air local programming. Without it, satellite companies say they have a tough time luring customers from cable competitors that can carry those stations.
The Senate still has to vote on the measure before it's sent to President Clinton for his signature.
Senate Banking Committee Chairman Phil Gramm, a Texas Republican, said he will block the bill unless backers remove a provision that would set up a $1.25 billion loan guarantee to encourage nonprofit groups and companies to bring satellite-TV service to rural areas.
